What is Lymphoedema?
Lymphoedema is swelling caused by a buildup of lymph fluid when the lymphatic system does not drain properly. It commonly affects the arms or legs but may also occur in the breast, trunk, head or neck.
It may develop when lymphatic system is damaged for example following cancer treatment, surgery, infection, trauma, or from a congenital lymphatic condition (Primary Lymphoedema). Swelling can also develop due to immobility or muscle weakness. Although lymphoedema is lifelong, effective treatment can significantly reduce symptoms and prevent it from getting worse.
